Shitsurei shimasu

Today’s topic is “Shitsurei shimasu.” In hiragana characters, it’s “しつれいします.”

This time, the topic is in Japanese because it’s quite difficult to tell the phrase in English.

It can be “Excuse me,” “I’m sorry,” or even “I’m leaving now.”

Furthermore, you can politely use this phrase when you enter a room.

The point in common is that we use this phrase when we feel what we do might make others feel bothered.

EN: Excuse me, do you have time?

JP: Shitsurei shimasu. Ojikan arimasuka?(しつれいします。おじかんありますか？)

EN: I’m sorry for bothering you.

JP: Oisogashiitokoro shitsurei shimashita.(おいそがしいところ、しつれいしました。)

EN: Then, I’m leaving now.

JP: Dewa, shitsurei shimasu.(では、しつれいします。)

If we talk about things happened in the past, we say “Shitsurei shimashita.”(しつれいしました)

We have a similar expression “Sumimasen,” and “Shitsurei shimasu” is politer than it.

When you work in Japan or work with Japanese people, you will think this phrase useful.
