Things you should not do during no class times working as an ALT in Japan
“Waiting will get you nothing, if you want something work for it.”

Japan schools have up to 7 periods a day, and each period has up to 50 minutes in length. On average, ALTs teach 3~5 classed per day. Free periods are teaching preparation time. In our previous blog, we talked about what you can do during your no-class times at school.

Now, let’s talk about the Top 5 things you should not do during class as an ALT in Japan. Please note that doing these things will affect your evaluation and give you the wrong impression at the school.
1. They are doing things that are not school-related.
Build your teacher’s and students’ trust by making the lesson stronger and helping the students better understand English. Be proactive, and don’t wait for someone to tell you what to do.
2. I was walking around the school while waiting for your next class.
Walking around and walking along the classroom’s hallway while having their class would turn the student’s head towards you and interrupt the class focus. Stay mainly in the teacher’s room and don’t walk around.
3. Use your cellphone for a long time to check your social media or watch videos.
Please don’t say I was looking for new material. It does not work. Refrain from looking at your social media in the school period. The school will get the wrong impression even if you look for new material. Check our previous blog about The Worst things you can do as an ALT | Heart Corporation (heart-school.jp)
4. Don’t go outside the school.
Going outside the school premises during your free periods is not allowed. Don’t go out and buy lunch, bring your lunch before you get to school. You must stay in the school during your working time.
5. Leaving the school early as the scheduled working time
You may finish your lessons, do many things, and create your lesson plans beforehand. Still, you are not allowed to leave early. ALTs must always no the school starting and finishing time, and you must stay at the school during the entire working time.
