Tips on how to handle Difficult Situations!
Working as an ALT is fun and interesting especially if you have students who are interested in English before you start. You can have a work-life balanced job and vacation time to enjoy the wonders of Japan! Sounds good right? It is!
Difficult Situation Number 1: Chatting and Ignoring the lesson.
It’s really hard to do your lesson if your students are talking and chatting with their friends right? You may feel frustrated and think that your lesson is not good. Don’t think that way! All you need to do is try to change your lesson style!
Ask this to yourself, why are the students ignoring my lessons. Is my lesson too boring? Is it too hard or too easy? Or Is my lesson not engaging enough? Maybe or maybe not! Try these suggestions below and there is a big chance these ideas can make it better.
1. Get to know your students.
Memorizing their names helps them feel that you are trying to get to know them. Some ALTs have a hard time memorizing students’ names. You can ask the teacher to make name tags in English to make it easier to say their names in the English class. It helps you to names instead of “you”. Next, you can try to find out what they like, and playing with them during recess, lunchtime, and talk to them outside and inside the classroom. Not only will you learn about them, but it will also help them get to know you better! It takes time but, you`ll get there! Trust me!
2 . Create fun games and activities
For some students, they don’t like English. The challenging part is how can you encourage the students to like English and better understand it. The best way is through fun games and activities. Give the students goals to achieve in the games and activities you create. In Heart WLPO, there are lots of activities, worksheets, ideas that you can use to help you create fun and engaging activities. Go there for hints or create your own.
3. Team–Teaching with Japanese Teachers
Working together with the Japanese teacher provides better examples to help the students to understand! When the Japanese teacher speaks English with you, the students will be motivated to speak like their teacher. They will start to see that if their teacher can speak it, so can I.
