Valentine’s Day in Japan
I am sharing the culture of the Valentine’s Day in Japan on this blog.
・A gift is usually chocolate (women to men)
In North America, for example, people give flowers, cards or jewelries to loved ones with some sweets maybe. It does not matter if you are a man or a woman. However, women are the ones who give chocolate to men in Japan. They could be couples or just someone who you like.
・Giri-choco culture
We have giri-choco which is chocolate for friends or co-workers. Giri means obligation or duty in English. You kind of express the gratitude by giving them chocolate.
・White Day
We have a day called White day which is March 14th, a month after the Valentine’s Day. Since women give chocolate to men, it is now men’s turn that they give something back to women in return.
Happy Valentine’s Day!!
