Majority vs Minority in the Classroom

In industrialized nations, the majority rules. For example, if you are voting. If the majority of the people vote for someone, they are considered the winner. Now, let’s take this concept into the classroom.

Few students can speak fluently in the classroom. However, when ALTs notices a student can, they propel towards that student, leaving the majority with question marks over their heads.

ALTs should not focus their attention on those who can but more on those who cannot. Think about it, those who can, do not have any problem understanding.

The focus of your lesson should be to help a majority of the students to understand English through simple games, activities, and role-plays that you create and present to the classroom teacher. This will help the students piece together their understanding and speak more English to you and the minority.
