Ajisai: Here comes the rainy season!

Ajisai

The rainy season can be a little troublesome. It hinders most of us in doing our normal activities especially outdoor activities. However, on the lighter note, the beginning of the month of June marks also the blooming season of one of the most adored flowers in Japan.

Ajisai (Hydrangea) is a seasonal flower sighted and highlighted during the rainy season. The Ajisai viewing is also an interesting tradition that most Japanese respect and do until these days.

The flowers start blooming from the early June to mid-July. The colors are filled with various colors from white, blue, aqua, pale red or pink and sometimes dark and light purple. Another fact is that the color of the flowers changes based on the acidity of the soil. When the soil is strongly acidic, the color tends to be blue, and when strongly alkaline, it changes to a reddish color.

These wonderful colors of these flowers wash away the gloomy mood which comes along with the weather specifically the rainy season.

It’s the time of the year to fill your eyes and heart with the wonderful sight that Ajisai brings along this season. Please enjoy it!
