How to protect yourself in an earthquake

On March 16th, a huge earthquake (M7.4) happened in Tohoku region in Japan. It occurs lots of times in Japan and we are already used to it. I was born and raised in Niigata prefecture, Japan and have experienced a huge earthquake that caused significant damage twice when I was a student. Fortunately, my house was intact, but I saw my town destroyed by the landslide. Aside from them, I experienced so many earthquakes in my life. There are lots of articles which say the ways to save your life from an earthquake, but I would like to give you some advices to protect yourself in an earthquake from my experiences.

Stay inside a building

It is said that you should go outside as soon as an earthquake occurs. In my opinion, however, it is more dangerous to move around during an earthquake. It depends on how solid the building is, but mostly buildings or houses are not broken by just an earthquake. The most of the damages is by Tsunami. That’s why I recommend to stay inside a building until an earthquake ends.

Prepare water

If an earthquake occurs, the water supply cuts off, which will cause other damages. For example, the toilet doesn’t flow, you can’t take shower and so on. If you can ensure your safety, the next threat is lack of water. If you prepare water in advance, you can survive longer.

Get latest information

Japanese people including me are used to earthquakes, so we can judge if we should stay home or flee for refuge based on the magnitude and the shakiness. In addition, you can get the latest information on your smartphone, TV, the internet and so on and they are very accurate. So if you can ensure your safety, you should stay home and check the situation.
